Many of the big-name brands of plant food we’re all familiar with are designed to give you fast and seemingly visually impressive results. However, often these are made artificially from fossil fuels or rely heavily on significant amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, NPK. From the manufacturing process to the effects they have on the soil and climate, these synthetic fertilisers are a big NO for many conscientious gardeners.
The first and most important difference between many of the well-known plant food and fertiliser producers and The Magic Molecule Company is that our products are not food.
Many of you will know of simple biostimulants such as seaweed which is often used in sustainable gardening or farming. Our biostimulants are complex as they are not one single thing like seaweed but multiple bioactive compounds to give even greater results.
Each of our products are packed full of special bioactive compounds that stimulate key processes in the development of a plants. This helps your plants develop and grow quicker, and defend and protect themselves better from pests and poor conditions – too much rain, drought, heat etc. These special bioactive compounds are bioflavonoids, which are essential signalling molecules that act as stress relievers, antioxidants, and metabolic stimulators for plants.
Synthetic fertilisers often work in the short term. Initially it seems impressive as they give your plants a boost. It does this with a big dose of nitrogen, making the plants look bigger, leafier and greener really quickly. These products are easy to spot, they will mostly consist of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and you may also be able to see urea on the ingredients list too.
But the use of these ingredients is unsustainable for the plant and for the environment.

As a plant grows, it creates and develops a symbiotic relationship with the microscopic organisms in the soil. Both the plant and the bacteria are dependent on each other. If we introduce an artificial source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) then we risk damaging that symbiotic relationship and degrading the soil health which the plants depend on.

Synthetic fertilisers can be harmful to all the life forms and organisms in soil that help make the soil so healthy and nutrient rich. If the dilution of a synthetic fertiliser is not right the product can burn your plants and damage the quality of your soil. This short-term solution then creates longer term problems because having compromised the nutrient enhancing microbes in the soil, the plant has nothing to sustain it – so it needs more of the same synthetic feed. Because of this we don't recommend the use of synthetic fertilisers are not recommended for use on your vegetable garden, or on any plants you may want to eat. It’s also why you’re advised to take care when using them because they can cause irritation and if they’ve been accidentally consumed you should seek immediate medical attention.
Throughout the country, farmers have recognised that the soil health has diminished greatly over the last 50 years. There are many initiatives now to help return the soil to a better condition and reduce the amount of NPK used in agriculture and keep it out of our rivers and water courses.
These symbiotic relationships are key to soil and plant health. Our biostimulants can enhance them with naturally produced bioflavonoids which means the plants will become less dependent on artificial foods - which then leads to a better environment.
