Be water-wise in your garden this July

Summer solstice may have passed, but July is often the hottest month of the year. We’re planning soaking up some sunshine in our gardens and enjoying our hard work, make sure you do too!

One important note is to remember to be water-wise throughout the warm temperatures to ensure your plants are well watered, but the water usage is sustainable.

  • Use rainwater where possible
  • Water using a can rather than a hose or sprinkler system
  • Water plants during cooler times of day, such as early morning or evening to reduce the amount lost to evaporation
  • Aim your water at the roots rather than the leaves
  • Weed regularly so your plants don’t have to compete for water from unwanted invaders

Other things on our to do list this month:

  • Care for your houseplants before you take a holiday
  • Hose down large leafed houseplants to remove dust that may have gathered
  • Keep deadheading flowers to ensure repeat flowering and to keep your garden looking gorgeous
  • Feed roses
  • Clear ponds of weeds and algae
  • Cut and hang lavender to enjoy the fragrance for longer
  • Plant autumn bulbs
  • Keep an eye out for snails and aphids
  • Celery, beans, peas, courgettes, pumpkins and tomatoes need regular watering
  • Pick your courgettes regularly before they become marrows
  • Pick the last rhubarb
  • Keep sowing fast-growing salad leaves
  • Lay thick mulch or compost around the base of fruit trees and bushes to hold in moisture
  • Make sure your greenhouse has some air circulation
  • Dampen the greenhouse floor on the mornings of hot days to increase humidity
  • Top up bird baths
  • Trim hedges

We are looking forward to pottering about and ticking these off the list. What garden jobs do you enjoy in the summer? Don’t forget to grab your Magic Molecule Co favourites here ready for this month’s jobs.
