Wildflower Lawns: add some colour and flowers to your grass

Way back at the beginning of the year we wrote a blog on the upcoming gardening trends we were expecting to see this year. It’s becoming clear that many of us are looking to ensure our gardens are sustainable, promoting the aesthetic that leans towards a more natural looking space as opposed to overly curated.

The perfect example of this? Wildflower lawns.

Not only do they add a more relaxed and natural look to your outdoor space, but they are also a really good way to ensure your garden is supporting the local wildlife and biodiversity, attracting more insects, pollinators and birds.

This springtime is a great opportunity to be introducing additional species in amongst your pre-existing lawn, or even from scratch. We suggest that you look for seed mixes and plug plants that are suited to your soil conditions and are native to the country, thereby avoiding any possible invasive species that could escape from your garden.

If you’re UK based, here are some of the varieties you might expect to find in your wildflower seed mixes:

Ox-eye daisy

Daisy

Corn marigold

MarigoldsPrimrose

Primrose

Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle

Forget-me-not

Lily of the valley

Foxglove

Such beautiful splashes of colour! Tempted to give it a try yourself?

You can get started in 3 different ways.

  1. By sowing the seeds thinly over soil
  2. By mowing grass short, then using a bulb planter to remove divots of turf, and replace with plug plants
  3. Or, by laying wildflower turf on bare soil and water in
