May Gardening Tips

The days are getting warmer and longer and we can feel that summer is on its way. Whilst we need to make sure the weather doesn’t catch us out with a surprise frost, we can now get busy planting!

What should you be doing in your garden?

Many of us are itching to get planting and filling up the soil with flowers and produce.

In the veg patch we’ll be planting:

  • Broad beans
  • Peas
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Carrots

Salads such as lettuce and rocket

  1. Thyme
  2. Rosemary
  3. Parsley
  4. Mint
  5. And leeks

Don’t forget that Carrot fly can really damage your crop, so you will need to ensure they’re covered in mesh for protection.

Young Strawberry Plant

Other plants we’re keen to plant more of are Strawberries, which can be planted outside now, and Sweet Peas!

These plants are half hardy and can therefore survive an unexpected cold snap. They require a bit of effort in the garden, but they reward you with lots of blooms and scent.

Top Tip

As Sweet Peas like moisture, you can line the trench they’re in with newspaper to ensure more moisture retention.

Sweet Peas

Depending on what sort of temperatures we have this month, you may want to keep your more tender produce under glass or delay planting till the end of May.

These include:

  • Squashes
  • Cucumbers
  • Tomatoes
  • Melons
  • Chillies
  • Aubergine
  • And courgettes

May is also a great time to feed your plants as growth starts to accelerate and extra nutrients are needed. You can remove a few centimetres of compost from your pots and replace with new compost with added fertiliser. Bedded shrubs and roses need a handful of fertiliser around the base to be forked in.

This month is an ideal time to introduce The Magic Molecule Co.’s range of biostimulants to your garden.

01 Flowers + Shrubs

01 Flowers + Shrubs is a perfect addition to the soil as your feed your roses and shrubs, to stimulant growth and development so you can enjoy more blooms in the coming months.

02 Garden Lawns

02 Garden Lawns Biostimulant is an advanced lawn formula which is perfect to start using as lawns can now be mown weekly. This product will ensure growth and development of a strong and healthy lawn for lots of use in the summer

03 Fruit _ Vegetables

03 Fruit + Vegetables Biostimulant will be a great addition to your garden care routine as they’re being planted outside. Frequent use will ensure bigger and tastier produce from your garden and a better resilience to unpredictable weather and pests
