Many of us are itching to get planting and filling up the soil with flowers and produce.
In the veg patch we’ll be planting:
Salads such as lettuce and rocket
Don’t forget that Carrot fly can really damage your crop, so you will need to ensure they’re covered in mesh for protection.
Other plants we’re keen to plant more of are Strawberries, which can be planted outside now, and Sweet Peas!
These plants are half hardy and can therefore survive an unexpected cold snap. They require a bit of effort in the garden, but they reward you with lots of blooms and scent.
As Sweet Peas like moisture, you can line the trench they’re in with newspaper to ensure more moisture retention.
Depending on what sort of temperatures we have this month, you may want to keep your more tender produce under glass or delay planting till the end of May.
These include:
May is also a great time to feed your plants as growth starts to accelerate and extra nutrients are needed.
