June gardening tips

Frosty nights are behind us, and all that extra light and warmth is going to be giving your garden a huge boost.

May ended with a glorious bank holiday, and we’re all hoping this sunshine is going to continue. We’re all looking forward to being able to  enjoy our gardens as much as possible during these longer and brighter days.

Things on our to do list this month:

  • Keeping weeds clear in the borders
  • Use collected rainwater as needed, especially for things newly planted
  • Move containers and hanging baskets outside
  • Mow the lawn once a week
  • Shade greenhouse to prevent them overheating and open vents
  • Keep ponds clear of blanket weed
  • Clip evergreen hedges
  • Turn the compost in your compost bin to keep it aerated
  • Top up bird baths with water

Sunny Lawn
  • Pick sweetpeas as soon as they flower to encourage more blooms
  • Stake any tall perennial plants to prevent them being blown over
  • Harvest lavender for baking or crafting projects
  • Use soft ties to train climbing plants to their supports
  • Lift and divide clumps of snowdrops and bluebells once the leaves are turning yellow

Sweet Pea Flower
  • Harvest early potatoes
  • Harvest salads and resow each fortnight
  • Prune plum and cherry trees
  • When onion and garlic leaves start to yellow, they’re ready for harvesting too

And most importantly, enjoy your outdoor space! Now is the time to enjoy the weather and the hard work you’ve put in over the winter. We plan on refreshing ourselves by finding a nice shady spot and sipping on homemade lemonade with some homegrown torn basil and plenty of ice.
